The Santa Claus community is unique. We are a small town with a rich history that links the generations together. At Key Associates of Santa Claus, we feel blessed to call this town our home. We feel very strongly about giving back and wanted to share just a few of the ways we are showing the love for the people and places in Santa Claus, Indiana, and the surrounding region.

St. Patrick’s Day

 Sláinte! And a very happy St. Patrick’s Day to you! Are you planning to wear green this weekend? Perhaps indulge in some Irish soda bread and pint of Guinness? There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate this Irish holiday right here in Southern Indiana, just a short drive away from the gates of Christmas Lake Village.

 St. Patrick’s Day was traditionally a religious holiday that was first observed in Ireland, a far cry from the Americanized version we celebrate today. It commemorates St. Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Irish Catholics would typically attend mass and spend a quiet day with family … the pubs were traditionally closed.

Presidents’ Day is observed on the third Monday of February. According to USA.gov, this holiday was intended to “honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. This date is commonly called Presidents’ Day and many groups honor the legacy of past presidents on this date.”

So, in honor of Presidents’ Day, we thought we’d spend a little time with a President who called the gently rolling hills of Southern Indiana home… Abraham Lincoln. Though he was born in Kentucky and entered politics in Illinois, Lincoln lived in Indiana for nearly fourteen years. It was here that he learned to read and write, that he grew to manhood, and developed many of the values and beliefs that would drive his political career.

This year, February brings us back-to-back reasons to celebrate. Valentine’s Day is on February 14th, of course. But did you know Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 13th? Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday," is the last day of the Carnival season, a last hurrah before Lent begins. The history of Mardi Gras is long and fascinating and despite its association with New Orleans, you’ll find some places to celebrate here in Southern Indiana as well.
