Birds are chirping, flowers are popping, and trees are beginning to blossom… it must be spring in southern Indiana. This weekend, many of us will celebrate Easter and all the promise it brings; hope, new life, and time spent surrounded by those we love. While some celebrate Easter for religious reasons, others mark its arrival in a more secular fashion, as the true beginning of spring.  There are numerous local businesses and attractions close to Santa Claus, Indiana, to help you make the most of your holiday. Whether you call Santa Claus home, or you’re still shopping homes for sale in Christmas Lake Village, we’ve got a rundown of ways to help you plan a hippity-hoppity Easter.

Easter is known as a moveable feast because it doesn’t fall on a set date every year. Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year. (http://www.history.com/topics/holidays/history-of-easter). Easter is late this year, falling on Sunday, April 16, 2017. A late Easter increases our chances of warm weather, allowing all those Easter egg hunters to enjoy the sunshine while seeking out their colorful bounty.

Of course, the Easter Bunny often needs a hand filling all those plastic eggs and highly anticipated baskets. For those of you who signed up to assist the bunny, you may want to make a stop at Santa’s Toys, located just across the street from the gates of Christmas Lake Village. This family-owned toy store is ready for Easter, stocking stuffed animals, Easter putty, fidgets, books, and more. With over 2,800 different toys to choose from, the bunny is sure to appreciate your assistance.  Visit Santastoys.net for more details.

Once you’ve ensured the eggs and baskets are ready to go, stop by Family Roots Nursery in nearby Dale, Indiana, to pick up some plants and flowers to use as decorations this weekend. This local nursery has a lovely variety of fresh herbs, hanging baskets, and beautiful flowers in addition to garden decorations, outdoor furniture, and more. If you don’t need any help on your dinner centerpiece, you can still take a look at their upcoming events. Their annual Spring Open House will be held the last weekend in April, and they’re offering several classes and workshops for adults and children. Visit their Facebook Page at Family Roots Nursery for times, dates, and excellent sales.

Are your dinner preparations underway? Still need to do pick up some menu items? Local grocery store Holiday Foods can certainly provide all the ingredients you need for mashed potatoes, casserole, and classic deviled eggs. If you have some time, you may want to visit Merkley and Sons in Jasper, Indiana, a family-owned company that has been serving up fresh, quality meat since 1954. There’s still time to take advantage of their Easter specials, including bacon, turkey, and pork tenderloin. Find them on Facebook under Merkley and Sons in Jasper, Indiana.

Finally, a trip to Jasper to pick up some fresh meat should also involve at stop for dessert. The aptly named Mad Batter has a huge variety of mouth-watering treats that will round out your Easter feast. How about colorfully frosted Easter Egg Sugar Cookies, Oreo Easter Egg Truffles, or carrot cake sure to please even the Easter Bunny? Visit their website at http://jaspermadbatter.com/.

If you’re planning to attend Easter services, there are numerous churches of different faiths in Santa Claus and the surrounding area.

The local Catholic Church in Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, is part of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Mass on Easter Sunday is at 11:00 am CT, though the nearby towns of Mariah Hill and Dale also offer mass options on Saturday and Sunday. http://www.catholicnorthspencer.org/

The Santa Claus United Methodist Church will offer Easter services on Easter Sunday at 8:00 am and 10:30 am CT and Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Santa Claus will hold Easter Service at 10:30 am CT as well. More information about both faith communities can be found on Facebook.

However you choose to observe Easter, we hope you enjoy a day full of sunshine, love, family, and friends. From all of us at Key Associates … Happy Easter!
